BBBS One-to-One Mentoring programs work! In the past year, BBBSCFL served 636 children, and an equal number of volunteers – that’s almost 1,300 people directly impacted by our services in one year! Take a look at just a few of the outcomes our children achieved:
Community-Based Mentoring
Children from the ages of 6-14 are matched with adult volunteers and spend time together in the community. Volunteers (Bigs) are fully screened. Matches are made after a thorough interview process with the child (Little), parent(s), and the Big. Bigs and Littles spend time together at least twice a month in an ongoing relationship for a minimum of one year. They spend time building their relationship while receiving professional support and guidance from BBBSCFL professional staff. Bigs and Littles share many experiences and activities such as going to the park, movies, picnics, sporting events and BBBSCFL sponsored activities.
School & Site Based Mentoring
Youth in need of academic support are matched with screened volunteers and meet weekly for approximately one hour throughout the academic year. Matches spend ˝ their time together working on goals set to improve the Little’s academic performance. The remaining time is dedicated to developing social skills, obtaining emotional support, and having fun. Matches meet on-site and are supported by the professional staff from BBBSCFL.
Big Couples Program
A big Couple program provides a unique opportunity for married couples. It’s a community-based match very similar to that of the on-to-one program, except that the married couples are matched together with one Little Brother. They still meet with their Little at his house and then go participate in activities, but the Big couple program provides a woman and her spouse with some flexibility.
They can hang out with a Little as a couple, that’s great. Or if one spouse is particularly busy one week, then the other can hang with the Little individually. The Little benefits not only from adding two new caring people into his life, but he also gets to see firsthand how two adults interact in a healthy, loving relationship. The Big Couple program is perfect for any married couple, but particularly for the younger married couples or the “empty nesters” with grown children.
Mentoring Children of Prisoners
“I deserve a brighter future” …The desire of a child.
Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCOP) is for children ages 6-17 in Orange County who have a parent incarcerated in a state or federal prison at this time. These children deserve a bright future. An adult volunteer can be matched with a child to help build a positive self-esteem, increase social skills and do fun activities in the community. If you know a child that has a parent incarcerated and can benefit from a positive role model, please contact
Jennifer Williams at 407-478-2996 or jwilliams@bbbscfl.org.
